Ground source heat pumps are already an extremely efficient method of heating, with the only operating cost being the electricity it takes to run the heat pump. If that electricity can be generated from renewable sources such as solar panels, wind turbines or microhydro electricity, the operating costs would be further decreased. This would be a way to move towards a completely self-sustaining system.
